What Attestation Means

Making a document official, wherever it needs to travel.

Attestation — sometimes called legalisation — is the process of certifying that a document is genuine, so a foreign country or authority will accept it as valid. In the UAE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) sits at the centre of this process, alongside embassies and the issuing country's own authorities.

The exact chain of stamps depends on which direction your document is travelling. BAEZ manages the coordination end-to-end, so you don't need to work out the sequence yourself.

Foreign document → used in the UAE

Typically attested in the issuing country first, then by the UAE embassy there, then finalised through UAE MOFA once in the country.

UAE document → used abroad

Typically attested through UAE MOFA first, then — if required — by the destination country's embassy in the UAE.

Attestation FAQs

Common questions about certificate attestation.

What's the difference between attestation and notarisation?

Notarisation typically confirms a signature or copy is genuine, often done locally by a notary. Attestation is a chain of government and embassy stamps confirming a document is valid for use in another country. Some documents need both, depending on their purpose.

Does my document need to be translated as well as attested?

Often, yes — if the destination country or institution doesn't accept the document's original language, a certified translation is usually required alongside attestation. We'll confirm this as part of mapping out your specific chain.

How long does attestation take?

This depends heavily on the document type, issuing country, destination, and how many stages are involved. Once we see your specific document and its destination, we'll give you a realistic timeframe rather than a generic estimate.

Is attestation different for a UAE document versus a foreign one?

Yes — a UAE-issued document going abroad typically starts with UAE MOFA, then moves to the destination country's embassy if required. A foreign document coming into the UAE usually needs attestation in its country of origin and at the UAE embassy there first, before being finalised at UAE MOFA.

Does every country require the same attestation steps?

No — requirements vary considerably by country and by the institution requesting the document. Rather than assume a standard process applies, tell us your document's destination and we'll confirm the exact steps for that specific case.
